Cambodia lifts adoption ban for Americans

Cambodia will end its 3 year ban on adoptions to Americans on January 1, 2013, but there will be some restrictions. Only children under the age of 8 will be allowed to be adopted and no more than 200 adoptions will be done each year, according to Long Visalo, the country’s Secretary of State.

He did not say whether the adoption ban would be lifted for other countries.

According to the US Embassy in Phnom Penh, US officials have met with Cambodian officials and while they are still unable to comply with the Hague Adoption Agreement the US supports the efforts being made towards compliance.

Check the State Department’s website for updates.
