Cambodia Allows Adoptions

cambodiakidsCambodia’s central adoption agency says it will begin allowing intercountry adoptions in 2014, but did not provide a specific timeline. It is likely children from Cambodia’s state-run institutions and children with special needs will be placed for adoption first.

The country is in the process of ensuring steps are in place to carefully monitor adoptions and the orphanages that are working to place children in families abroad. Steps being taken include regulation of Cambodia’s many unlicensed orphanages, instituting a case management system to identify prospective adoptive children, and duly considering domestic placement options in accordance with the Convention.

The Voice of America reported on Cambodia’s history with adoptions and its recent announcement to open the country to adoption again.
